Newton’s method to solve nonlinear equations.

If the start value is removed too far from true zero it fails.

    Always account for variable change.

Perhaps you’d care to tell us a little more on application of this?

Very interesting show. I really enjoyed the degrees of separation discussion . 2 things I wonder:
1st, have you considered building the degrees of separation parameter into the Basics of Winning spreadsheet results can be assessed on that basis?
2nd, you mentioned a competitiveness metric based on a Pace Advantage thread. I wonder if that might have a significant correlation to degrees of separation.

The BOW Spreadsheet-thing is a good idea, but the whole concept probably needs a little more fleshing out.

I am not sure that the Degrees of Separation are closely related to the PA thread idea or not. For one thing, I think the degrees are very personal in the sense that some people truly specialize in different kinds of races.

Here is a link to that PA thread if you’d like to read it for yourself. (You might have to ignore a few posts to get the meat.) PA Thread

I thought the “Degree of Separation” was a good way to think about it. Saratoga is tough that way. I think “1 degree of separation” is the different for each track.
I also agree with the comment “you are handicapping the same way even if you don’t think you are”. And most of us have found out, Saratoga will punish you of it.
I realized this the last 10 days of the meet and using your language when I was out 3-4 degree of separation I weighted my normal handicapping less and added a few more factors like is he horse “gray” and trainer and jockey angles more. I hit a few more races and had more fun.
    Great show Dave.

    Hi Dave,
I am back from vacation and catching up. I just watched HSH Insiders #1
and if that doesn’t get you excited you don’t have a pulse. One of the
things I learned from your visit to Saratoga was setting up Pkm to run
different systems and cycles. I liked the idea of one factor at a time
(and re-running Pkm) – it just made sense to me. I set up my Dyn filter and have run a couple
Static filters that way. But what you showed was a number of levels
higher. For a couple weeks now I have been using my top two Dynamic
contenders and New Pace in a Monty type system and been successful. And
in 3 or 4 weeks in HSH insiders #3 you are going to take that to a new
    level.
Just great stuff and I can’t wait (if only work was this interesting).
    Thanks,
    Bill
